JAY SILVERHEELS (May 26, 1912 - March 5, 1980)
Jay Silverheels was born, "Harold J. Smith", to A.G.E. Smith, a Mohawk Chief and military officer from the Six Nations Reservation near Brantford, Ontario.
As a youngster, Jay was very athletic. He was a star lacrosse player, boxer and wrestler before landing a job as a stuntman in Hollywood movies in 1938.
He eventually picked up some small movie roles in movies such as "Key Largo", with Humphrey Bogart, and "The Cowboy and the Indians", with Clayton Moore. By 1949 he was hired to play the faithful Indian friend of the Lone Ranger in the television series with the same name which ran from 1949-1957.
He served in WWII, and then returned home to continue his acting career. Although he was type-casted following The Lone Ranger series, he managed to find acting work in several more movies. He has been called, "One of the most famous and successful Canadian actors in the history of Hollywood", and today you can visit his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Jay suffered a crippling stroke in 1975, and passed away in 1980 at his Woodland Hills, California home.
