Geocache Description:

A canyon in the Great Basin Desert with a creek running through it.

South of the community of Fields, getting close to Nevada, is a canyon with a small creek running down it. It is on the eastern edge of the Pueblo Mountains. The creek is lined cottonwood trees, hence the name. This is a special place. You can see a variety of desert plants and animals here. The rocks in this canyon are colorful and interesting. There are several good camping spots along Cottonwood Creek. For more information on this area read in Oregon's Dry Side by Alan St. John, on pages 204-211. There is a little information available from the BLM website: (visit link)
The cache is not far off of the paved road and you could drive a family car to within 100 yards of it, carefully. The cache container is a 6X6 plastic lock/lock box, painted camo. It is well hidden because the area is frequently visited by desert rats, geologists, and hunters. Please hide it well again when you are done. A high clearance vehicle can drive another 1/2 mile up the canyon. Looking SW from the cache the big mountain is Pueblo Mountain. As always in this country, be prepared with tools, tires, and water. You will likely see wildlife, which could include rattlesnakes. I averaged the GPS coordinates 3 times, so they should be good.
