Geocache Description:

If starting from the Highway-79 West Mesa parking area this Geocache is one of a very large set of hides that will take you from about 4,500 to about 6,500 feet in altitude along well surfaced fire roads and trails. Be aware that trails are restricted to hiking and horseback riding and no dogs allowed. If heading for the high-country loop that consists of Fern Flat Fire Road, West Mesa Trail, Burnt Pine Trail, Lookout Fire Road then expect a distance of about 11.5 miles.

These mountainous fire roads and trails take you through the recovering aftermath of a huge wildfire that stripped the hills of beautiful timber years ago. Expect to see an extensive graveyard of charred and fallen trees and ghostly forests of deciduous trees that died in the wildfire but did not burn and fall, rather they have weathered to silvery color that adds interest to this outdoor experience. The summit of Cuyamaca Mountain is along the way as well as Japacha Peak. One will find an old Team Gecko hide at the top of Cuyamaca Peak but Japacha Peak is unapproachable due to a covering of very dense undergrowth. High country vistas and the multitude of charred and fallen trees will surely remain in your memory. Better still, do bring and use a camera to preserve the unlimited opportunities for dramatic images.
