In the Victorian era, flowers had their own language. Besides roses symbolizing love, others would speak of jealousy, admiration or remembrance. In an age where words could not be spoken, the offering of a flower with the right hand meant "yes" while "no" was said by an offer with the left hand. Additionally the colour or size of a flower and the number of flowers in a bouquet would vary the meaning. The study of the language of flowers was important to prevent a social faux pas.
One of my favourite flowers, the HIBISCUS, is a tropical plant. It will not withstand the winters in Central Ontario but can be grown as a houseplant. Unfortunately I do not have a green thumb with indoor plants.
In the Victorian age, the hibiscus had 2 meanings. It could convey either "consumed by love" or "delicate beauty".
In the 21st century, flowers have a new terminology. The hibiscus is special, as it can also convey hidden latitude and longitude co-ordinates to savvy geocachers.
Image has been changed at 7pm on 05/28/2012 to reflect the new coo-ordinates a few meters away from original placement.
