Geocache Description:

This loop begins and ends in Birling following a series of 21 caches (including bonus cache) on a lovely walk of approximately 4 miles below the North Downs.

The Birling Loop is the second of a set of three circular walks in this beautiful stretch of countryside below the North Downs. The first is the Trottiscliffe Trail and the third the Snodland Circuit. The Birling Loop links up with the Trottiscliffe Trail between BL15 and BL16 and with the Snodland Circuit in the village of Birling, where both walks begin and end.

Caches BL03, BL08 and BL18 are ‘small’ size containers with room for swaps, trackables, etc. The remaining caches are all ‘micro’ size (30ml pots that are either film canisters or screw-cap containers); some may be encased within an outer 60ml container; some may be camouflaged. Please bring your own pen. The caches are numbered on the assumption that the walk will begin in Birling, where there is a car park behind the church.

To avoid later problems, please replace the containers carefully, exactly as found, reinstating any camouflage so as not to leave any caches unduly exposed.

Cache BL01 is a ‘multi’ where you will need to visit the published co-ordinates to find the answer to a question before the cache can be found. To get the co-ordinates for the bonus cache (BLB), you will need to collect the clues in caches BL01 to BL10 only. These are printed at the foot of the front page of the log in micros and on the inside of the front cover of the log book in regular size caches. Work out the co-ordinates as soon as you have obtained the required numbers for V, W, X, Y and Z. Picking up the bonus cache will involve a short detour from the loop. Do not leave the bonus until the end of the walk otherwise it will be a very long detour!

The route should be straightforward, although there are a couple of places where the footpath across the fields may not be obvious at all times of year. After finding BL15 continue along the track for a few steps and then turn sharp left to face SE and pick up the right of way which runs diagonally across the field towards BL16. If in doubt, simply walk round the edge of the field. After finding BL17 follow the GPS directly to the next cache. The right of way runs diagonally, cutting off the corner of this field.

There is a possibility that, on the odd occasion, pigeon / pheasant shooting could take place take place in the vicinity of the path from BL13 through to BL15. If necessary, these three caches can be bypassed using the track that runs north of this path

There is a pub conveniently located close to the parking area for refreshments at the end of the walk.
