Covent Garden, in the heart of London was originally the Anglo-Saxon trading town of Lundenwic. In the 13th century it was the arable land and orchard of Westminster Abbey and was referred to as "the garden of the Abbey and Convent". It became an area of disrepute with taverns and brothels and then slowly changed into a fruit and flower market. In 1974 the traffic congestion was so great, the market was relocated to Nine Elms in Battersea/Vauxhall and the central buildings reopened as a shopping and craft centre. The central square has a history of street performers. The church of St Pauls, designed by Inigo Jones, is known as the actors church and was completed in 1633. The area is a must for all tourists and has a great selection of restaurants and theatres.
