Bull Frog - An Island Spirit Legacy.

The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.

All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.

Bull Frog

In the 1930's, Bull Frogs started being bred commercially in BC for their legs. Unfortunately many of these ventures were unprofitable and so the frogs were released into ponds, lakes and streams. The Bull Frog is an invasive species that is eating everything in it's path including our native frogs, the chorus frog and red legged frog. They also eat the small fish in lakes, mice and even newly hatched ducklings. But the biggest reason for them spreading so fast is curious humans who take eggs or tadpoles home to watch them grow and then rather than returning them to where they got them, they get released in the nearby stream or backyard pond and it only takes 2 frogs to create a new colony that can wipe out the native species of another lake. Living up to 5 years, females can produce 20,000 eggs every year...that's a lot of tadpoles.
