Geocache Description:

Cache at the memorial to Glenmalure Park.

The housing estate here was once a football stadium. One of the most famous stadiums in Ireland and home to Ireland's most successful soccer team.
Opened in 1926 the stadium saw many eventful nights until its untimely close in 1987. The Shamrock Rovers website has a history page which lists some of the history in more detail.

In 1987 the Kilcoyne family bought the ground from the Jesuits. It was subsequently sold to developers without any consultation with supporters of the club, leaving the football club homeless with little more than a set of jerseys. After spending 20 years of homelessness Shamrock Rovers played their first home game in Tallaght Stadium in 2007 against Sligo Rovers, the last team that they played in Milltown. Shamrock Rovers is now owned by its members and Tallaght Stadium is owned by South Dublin County Council - thus ensuring that no individual will ever again be able to destroy the club for personal greed.
The ground is marked by the memorial at this site which was erected by Shamrock Rovers supporters in 1998.

There is no need to go into the estate. The cache can be accessed from the outside. Initial contents contain various Shamrock Rovers pins and badges.
