Instructions

The posted coordinates will take you to the start of the trail of retro-reflective Fire Tack trail markers. When you shine a flashlight on these trail markers, they reflect back directly to the light source and are very bright and visible. For best results, hold your flashlight at eye level and pan it back and forth; a headlamp also works well for this.

You should stay on the trail for the entire walk, with the exception of the last 10-20' to the cache. The Fire Tacks are placed on trees along the route. Some are slightly off of trail, but close enough to see. The Fire Tacks are spaced out approximately 40-50 paces (120-150 feet). At intersections, the Fire Tacks are spaced out about 20-30 paces (60-90 feet). You should be able to see the direction of travel from the intersection, but you may have to walk a few feet down the trail to be sure. Remember, you will be staying on the trail for most of your walk. When you come to a tree with a cluster of Fire Tacks, you have found the final. Search the immediate area for a typical geocache hide.

This cache follows established trails, but they are narrow and/or steep in places. There are also several places where there are exposed roots that can pose a tripping hazard. There are also areas of the trail that are flanked by a gently sea of poison ivy. Be aware of your surroundings and use caution when attempting this, or any other, geocahce.

What To Bring

  • FLASHLIGHTS and/or headlamps. It is a good idea to have a backup flashlight.
  • EXTRA BATTERIES. It is a good idea to have a backup batteries for your flashlight and GPS.
  • A BUDDY. You will be walking in the woods at dark. There are hazards in the woods (day and night). Please be aware of your surroundings. If you don't feel comfortable walking in the woods in the dark, please don't attempt this cache.
  • YOUR GPS. It will get you to the starting coordinates and may be useful for helping you navigate back to your car. The Fire Tacks are placed so that you should be able to follow the same trail out as you did in, but it may be helpful to also follow the track on your GPS back to the start.
  • LONG PANTS. It's hot out in the summer, but there is poison ivy and bugs (especially at night) in the area.

The Cache

The cache is a small custom camouflaged lock-n-lock container that is shielded from casual viewing by some local natural materials. There is a full size lammie for FTF and some mini-lammies for the next 20 finders. There is room for small trades or trackables.

Please re-hide the cache well.
