Close to Oakham and Rutland Water, St Edmund's exterior is perfectly pleasant The south door has columns decorated similarly to those on the chancel arch. The tympanum (the bit between the lintel and the arch above it) shows in the centre a wheel flanked by a lion and an animal with wings (is it a bird?). This all dates from the 12th century.
In the nave the is 13th century, the north aisle was removed and the arcades filled in, while the painting above the chancel arch is of the Royal Arms of George II.
Each side of the chancel arch has a column with decorated shaft, capital (the bit on top of the shaft), and abacus (the flat bit on top of the capital).
