During the 1800's Augustus Hazard owned and operated a powder mill in this area. At its peak the Hazard Powder Company operated in 125 buildings occupying hundreds of acres of land with 25 water wheels and 3 steam engines along a mile of Scantic River frontage.
Hazard Powder Company was one of the three largest among the six companies of the United States Gunpowder Trade Association popularly known as the powder trust. During the Civil War the Hazard Powder Company supplied the Union with 12,500 pounds of powder per day, 40% of the Union’s needs.
A major explosion on January 14, 1913 destroyed much of the plant and they closed. This is what remains.
Parking and the trail head can be found at N 41° 58.721 W 072° 30.327.
At the first stage you will visit a piece of history. As part of this "piece of history" you will find what is left of a wheel. You will need to count how many teeth are left on the wheel. That will equal A. To get the coordinates for the next stage:
add 43 to A then add that total to the last 3 digits of the North coordinates above.
add 28 to A then add that total to the West coordinates above.
Each additional stage will supply you with coordinates for where to go next. Be careful though. There may be decoys.
