Geocache Description:

During the 1800's Augustus Hazard owned and operated a powder mill in this area. At its peak the Hazard Powder Company operated in 125 buildings occupying hundreds of acres of land with 25 water wheels and 3 steam engines along a mile of Scantic River frontage.

Hazard Powder Company was one of the three largest among the six companies of the United States Gunpowder Trade Association popularly known as the powder trust. During the Civil War the Hazard Powder Company supplied the Union with 12,500 pounds of powder per day, 40% of the Union’s needs. A major explosion on January 14, 1913 destroyed much of the plant and they closed. This is what remains.

Parking and the trail head can be found at N 41° 58.721 W 072° 30.327.

At the first stage you will visit a piece of history. On what is left of this "piece of history" you will find the town name where it was made. You will need to convert the letters in the name of the town (not the state) into their corresponding number values, where A=1...Z=26. Now you need to do a little math.

Here you go, pay attention: For the North coordinates: 1. Square each of the values individually. 2. Then add those squared values together. 3. Now add up the original values and divide that number by 10. 4. Subtract the value you get in step 3 from the value you got in step 2. 5. insert the answer here: 41 58.NNN For the West coordinates: 1. Add up the values of each of the letters 2. Multiply that total by 12 3. Subtract the square root of 49 4. insert the answer here: 072 29.WWW.

Now go for a half-mile or so hike and you will find a 4x6 lock and lock.

Hunting is allowed here so you may want to wear your blaze orange. Although I have never personally seen any hunters here, there are deer stands -- so I'm guessing that I am just not there at the wrong time. You will encounter low spots with mud and some water crossings during this adventure. When you have to hike up a steep hill, you are getting close to the cache! The cache is around 75 feet off of the trail. Enjoy the adventure!
