This container is a large small, or small regular duct-taped cylindrical screw-top plastic jar. It contains a geocache statement, the log, a short history of the man for whom this cache is a memorial, and a few small tradables. It is hidden above an old cemetery across the road from a small church in Dysartville, NC. Please read the complete description for information about the cache.
Reverend Lewis McCurry was born in a part of Rutherford County, NC, that is now part of Cleveland County. He was the oldest son of Micajah McCurry, a prominent farmer and businessman who is said to have at one time had 50-70 slaves mining gold above the Broad River and along Cane Creek in Golden Valley, NC.
Reverend McCurry pastored a number of small churches in the area, the last of them being Dysartville Baptist Church where he requested to be buried in just a plain pine box. Presumably his wife and probably two unmarrried daughters are likewise buried there in unmarked graves. Five daughters are buried there in marked graves, while Lewis’ only son, Reverend John L. McCurry, and Lewis’ youngest daughter are buried at Beaver Dam Baptist Church where John pastored for most of his career.
Following is Preacher Lewis McCurry's obituary from The Shelby Aurora issue of September 12, 1889:
“A Good Man Gone.”
“A noted pioneer Baptist preacher, Elder Lewis McCurry, son of Micajah McCurry, died recently at Dysartsville, McDowell county, N.C. Born in 1800 in Rutherford County, he enlisted in the cause of Christ and became one of the pioneers who planted the Cross in this and adjacent counties. His successful labors of many decades and his exemplary Christian life have left their impress upon this region, which fondly cherishes his memory. For nearly three score and ten years he preached the Holy Gospel and two days before his death he filled the pulpit. At the age of nearly ninety years he died.”
Except for vehicles passing along the roads just outside the cemetery, the area usually is very quiet. You would be best served to park somewhere along the road that runs up the hill and around the cemetery.
