mtn-man Appreciation Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CaneMaster: We want to present Mtn-Man with a full logbook of at least 100 personal "Thank You Letters!"

We were close, with over 80 letters in our previous log notebook, before someone stole it!

So we are going to archive this cache and place another one for Mtn-Man. That way everyone who signed the one that got stolen can come back and sign it again and receive new cache credit for it.

Thanks,
The CaneMaster Family

Geocache Description:

MTN-MAN APPRECIATION CACHE:

Often we thank the people who hide the caches we enjoy finding.

However, most of us forget to thank the one man behind the scenes who has been personally reviewing and approving each and every geocache hidden in Mississippi since March of 2002. If it wasn’t for his tireless volunteer efforts there wouldn’t be any geocaches for us to find in our state.

Therefore, the purpose of this cache is to give Mississippi geocachers (and anyone else passing through) a chance to show their appreciation to mtn-man for the large portion of time which he freely devotes to making geocaching in Mississippi possible.

THE CACHE AND LOCATION:

Take I-20 to Exit 77, which is one of the Morton exits. This exit is about 18 miles east of Brandon. At Exit 77, take Highway 13 and head north about a mile.

The hide is on a half mile long scenic drive road which takes you up a hill, past a public observation tower, over the crest of a higher hill, and back down to highway 13. The only traffic this scenic road gets is people who want to get out and look at the views from the hill or climb the observation tower (highly recommended) and so it has very little traffic. This means that you can park on the side of the road close to the cache.

This cache is an ammo can (our first) which has been covered with camouflage tape and hidden in the woods about 15 to 20 feet from the road. There is a slightly inclined hill down from the road to the cache location, but nothing that children and older people (I’m an older people!) can’t handle. There is a little brush and a few brambles, so you have to choose the correct path to take to the cache.

SIGNING THE PAPER LOG:

The paper log for this cache is in the form of a special composition book which we would like to present to mtn-man as a keepsake after a good number of Mississippi geocachers have written their own personal letter of appreciation to mtn-man in it.

These days people write mostly short notes, often only TFTH or TNLN on the online logs and rarely more than their geocaching screen name on the paper logs. However, in the early days of geocaching people wrote a whole lot more on the paper logs than they do now. They took the time to personalize the log book for the hider by writing about their experience hunting for the geocache and expressing their appreciation to the hider. I’ve even seen nice hand drawings in some of the old logbooks from the early years.

So for this geocache, instead of thanking us in the paper log book for hiding it, we’d like for everyone who finds it to take the time to actually write a page or more letting mtn-man know how much you have enjoyed hunting for and finding Mississippi geocaches and expressing your appreciate for his making it happen.

We have placed in the log’s ziploc bag several different colored pens for you to use. Feel free to embellish it with nice hand drawings, stickers, stories about your favorite Mississippi find, etc.

Please make it a personalized keepsake that the CaneMaster family can present to mtn-man after a good number of Mississippians have expressed their appreciation to him in it.

Thanks,
The CaneMaster Family

Also, only leave trade items which are BRAND NEW and still in their original packaging. No McDonald’s toys please! By the way, since we live nearby we will be checking this cache’s inventory after each online logging. So we will know who took these items and what they left in their place.

OTHER CACHES NEARBY:

There are two other geocaches hidden right on this half mile road which you might want to get while you are here:

1. Our own Head East Young Man (GC2JTT6) (visit link) which is a quick and easy 1/1 Park-N-Grab

2. Reglbgl’s very cool hide known as Overlook13 (GCW9H0) (visit link) which is a bit harder than ours, but a whole lot of fun to look for.

You are also on the edge of Roosevelt State Park’s land which has 11 geocaches hidden along trails and by the lake. So you could make a day of it there after finding our easier caches. A brand new McDonald’s restaurant, gas station and convenience store are just down the road for your convenience.

Have fun.
