Waikanae Railway Station became the northernmost station on the Kapiti Line for Tranz Metro's electric commuter trains from Wellington when the service was extended to Waikanae in 2011. Buses connect with the train at the south end of the station.

A photo on display in the Waikanae museum taken after the Wellington and Manawatu Railway had been opened in November 1886. There was no State Highway in those days.

The station was first opened in 1886, and was on the Wellington-Manawatu Line from Wellington to Longburn built by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR). The section was opened on 3 November 1886 at Otaihanga.

The electrified commuter service extension to Waikanae was completed in February 2011. The new service was opened with a ceremony at Waikanae on 19 February. Minister of Transport Steven Joyce and Otaki MP Nathan Guy drove in the last spike. Nathan Guy's great-grandfather was chairman of the WMR when the last spike was driven in 1886.

Logging Etiquette:
Geocache owners put a great deal of thought and effort into placing and maintaining caches. As a geocache finder, you have made an effort to join in with geocaching, and to go out of your way to find the cache, so please make an effort in logging your find. Cache owners do not welcome single words, acronyms, or "copy and paste" logs as they don't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log :)
