The first of a series of caches along HWY 89 South of Meyers. The cache is a small, camo'd container. Park across the highway in the pull out and BE CAREFUL crossing the road. Cache may be hard to access in the winter.
Archimedes was the greatest mathematician/scientist in ancient Greece, and I would rate him in the top 3 mathematicians of all-time. Through the method of exhaustion, he showed knowledge of the fundamentals of Calculus (which was “invented” almost 1800 years after his death). He calculated the value of pi to be between 3.1408 and 3.1429, and also determined the formula for the surface area of a sphere.
Archimedes was also instrumental in the defense of his home city of Syracuse as it was besieged by Rome. He supposedly invented a claw used to grab ships in the ocean, and also a heat ray that focused the Sun’s energy using mirrors. When the Roman soldiers entered the city, they were told not to harm Archimedes. However, Archimedes was slain when he told a soldier not to bother his mathematical work. Sounds like a mathematician to me.
