A magnetic nano.
On November 7th 1883 a terrible explosion ripped through the underground workings of Moorfield Pit, located close to the memorial on the main road. This resulted in the death of 68 men and boys of school age.One 11 year old died on his 3rd working day. Some families lost 2 or 3 sons.
One sad story goes as follows:-
James Mackintosh, the under-manager for the colliery was the first man down the mine after the explosion. He spent the next 24 hours helping the injured and searching for the dead, one of whom was his father the colliery manager.
He was subsequently offered the post of manager but he never went down the mine again.
He later became the landlord of the nearby Greyhound Hotel. On the morning of the 10th anniversary of the disaster he came down into the public bar and committed suicide.
The pit has gone and an industrial estate is in its place.
