This cache is hidden close to the coordinates on one of the Kirkbride Foot paths. Have your wellies as the path is extremely muddy. The Pill Box is well maintained, still has some machine gun fittings and gives a good all round view of hangars and run way when looking south.
Parking is easily done at Beech Lea which leads directly on to footpath for cache.

KIRKBRIDE AERODROME: PILL-BOXES
Standing guard over the Wampool flood plain, this classic type 22 pill-boxe form a group of emplacements arranged along the eastern side of the aerodrome. A further pill-box is sited westwards on the other side of the Kirkbride road, adjacent to the guard-house. The pill-boxes featured here are all located near Black House Farm on the eastern side of the Wigton-Kirkbride road, near to the aerodrome entrance.
Kirkbride aerodrome was planned as an Aircraft Storage Unit in 1938. In 1939, No:12 Maintenance Unit was formed, remaining active until closure of the aerodrome in 1960.
In 1943, the runways at Kirkbride aerodrome were extended to allow Liberators to land. Other aircraft popular here at that time were Mitchell bombers, Wellingtons, Halifaxes and Bostons.
Bring a pencil or pen to sign log as it is a nano!!
