Highlands Hammock
is considered a treasure because of the young men of the Civilian
Conservation Corps who worked so hard to develop this park. CCC
camps were set up across the state and the nation to put young men
to work during the great depression. Highlands Hammock is just one
of the first Florida State Parks that these young men helped to
build. This series of geocaches profiles different sites in
Florida
developed by the CCC.
Torreya State Park is named for an extremely rare species of
Torreya tree that only grows on the bluffs along the Apalachicola
River. Torreya is located in the panhandle and like Highland
Hammock greatly benefited from the efforts of the
CCC

One of the
projects the CCC tackled at Torreya was moving and rebuilding the
Gregory House. The Gregory House, part of a prosperous plantation
before the Civil War, originally stood across the river from the
park at Ocheesee Landing. In 1935, the CCC moved the house to its
current location and restored it for possible use as a small
hotel.

This geocache was
originally stocked with unique swag from Torreya.
