Geocache Description:

Tocumwal Levee Bank

Welcome to my 92nd cache hide...
Having lived in the town of Tocumwal now for about 5 years, i thought it was about time for a cache that features the very levee bank that protects the town from inundation with water in times of flood.... First image below is of the levee bank in town, the second image is of the levee bank near the cache hide, about 7 kms out of town on Lower River Road.

A few facts about the levee bank.

- Constructed in 1906
- In 1908, near Blake's flour mill, levee was strengthened.
- Between 1939 and 1944 during the time of USAF occupation of the Tocumwal Air Base, the height of the levee banks was increased to protect against any forseeable flooding and to protect, in particular, the airfield from flooding.
- 1st September 1970 sat the levee lapping with water with the biggest volume of water ever seen coming down the river.
- 1976 to 1978 saw the construction of new levee's and strengthening of original banks.
- 1983 saw the levee banks again raised, this time another 0.9m for a length of about 600m in the main town area.
-In 1993 the Murray River reached 7.36m and some of the levee banks outside of town succumbed to the force of the water, and a large amount of farmland was flooded.
-2010 again saw the levee banks tested with flood waters in the river reaching almost 7 meters. The levee's held.

While visiting this cache, you will actually drive on a portion of Lower River Road, which forms part of the levee bank. I wonder what sort of river height would be needed to breach the banks in town? I can't seem to find that information, but it would be an amazing sight to see that much water in the river.

Below is a link to the Tocumwal Community Website with lots of information on the town and its history. Tocumwal Community Website

The cache itslef is a 375ml plastic screw top jar. Should be nice and waterproof. Please hide as found. Initial contents are a logbook only. I ran out a toys, pens etc, but couldn't go past the significance of this hide.

As always with caches near a main road, be careful, especially with the kiddies. As this is a rural cache, BE VERY WARY OF SNAKES. Importantly, have fun.
