Myths and Legends: The Mill Pond Maiden

My family have a great love of the mysteries associated with the local area, and from a young age I was brought up on tales of ghosts, pixies, witches, and such like, so I thought it would be a good theme for some caches to introduce others to the many myths and legends of South West Cornwall.

The vicinity of this cache is said to be haunted by the ghost of the young maiden who was in love with the son of the squire of Kenegie manor , she was a poor relation, a cousin, who the son had fallen in love with, much to the disapproval of his father and the favoured housekeeper, the poor cousin lived at the manor with her wealthy relations, but was frowned upon especially when her relationship with the heir was discovered. The squire told his son that he would marry his housekeeper to prevent his money going to his less fortunate relation. On hearing this the girl heartbroken, wandered off one night and was found drowned the next morning in the mill pond.
It was also said that her spirit took on the form of a white hare, that would follow the young squire, and eventually was to be blamed for his riding accident, in which he perished.
