This is number 18 of a series of caches dedicated to my two favorite hobbies. Geocaching and Birding. Both require you to go get out of the house and do some walking. While out geocaching I easily get distracted by birds that I encounter, but it makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Each of these caches are placed in an area where there is a heavy concentration of birds or a certain species of birds that I think people would enjoy learning more about and seeing first-handed. So if you have a pair of binoculars, bring them along with your pen for some close up views.
This cache is dedicated to one of my favorite birds, the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.
I'm really glad that we live in Texas and get to experience this bird. It seems like day one of spring I see one, like clockwork every year. Sadly they depart to spend winter in Central America. It is a striking bird of the central United States, nearly unmistakable with its long forked tail and salmon-pink belly. I love watching it calmly sitting on wires, then leaps up and gobbles an insect.
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher uses many human products in its nest, such as string, cloth, paper, carpet fuzz, and cigarette filters. One study of nests in an urban area in Texas found that artificial materials accounted for 30% of the weight of nests.
This cache is located on an extension trail of Rochelle Park. I do not know how much muggle traffic flow is, but there are windows galore, so please be stealthy. Also please conceal as best as possible after signing log.
