A History of Alice Springs Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Balayang: I am regretfully archiving this cache since unfortunately there has been no action to restore it, or any communication from the cache owner, redcenterdazza, requesting additional time.

An ample opportunity has been provided for the Cache Owner to respond, but since this opportunity has been ignored, I can only conclude that the cache has been abandoned.

Caches archived under these circumstances are unable to be Unarchived, and this location is now available for the placement of a new cache, by somebody else.

Geocache Description:

A History of Alice Springs III - Smith Street

Always interesting to learn about the pioneers who opened up Central Australia!

James Churchill-Smith and Edward M. Bagot Jnr, brought 600 head of mixed Hereford and Shorthorn cattle from the Barossa Valley to stock Undoolya Station. Churchill-Smith kept a daily diary of the trip which befan on 13 March 1872 when they left N. Adelaide for the Barossa Valley.

During the journey they met Sir Charles Todd returning south after completion of the OTL.

They also met W.C. Gosse, Colonel Peter Warburton, and Earnest Giles (all have streets named after them in the Alice) with their parties, who were travelling north to explore, as they had the security of the OTL and wells along the line at the start of their expeditions.

Churchill-Smith and Bagot reached Undoolya in March 1873.

Later Smith selected the station site and built a small dwelling.
