Geocache Description:

This is a two-stage multicache which takes you to the childhood home and tribute to the Ringling Brothers, founders of the famous Ringling Bros. Circus. This can be thought of as a prequel to the related “One Ring Circus” geocache in Baraboo, WI. By the 1930s, Ringling Bros. had created the largest and most famous circus in the world.

While it is true that the Ringling Bros. performed their first “professional” circus in Baraboo, WI in 1884, their first amateur performance took place in the early 1870s in a vacant lot next to their home using clotheslines borrowed from neighbors to string up a tent.

In 1870, the Dan Rice Steamboat Circus came to McGregor via the Mississippi River. This is when the boys got the performance “bug” and made plans to own and operate a circus some day. Charging just pennies for their show, the boys performed tumbling and juggling and included a trained billy goat and neighborhood dogs in their backyard act. The oldest brother Albert was the ringmaster and balanced a plow on his chin.

First stage (at posted coordinates): The first stage of this geocache takes you to the childhood home of the brothers. Four of the seven brothers were born in this home in an area of town then called Walton Hollow. The family lived here from 1859 to 1872. Today, the house is a private home. Please do not step foot on the property. Just try to imagine the brothers growing up, practicing their acts, and performing their first amateur "zero-ring" circus here in the early 1870s.

To find the second, final stage of the cache, you will need to record the address number of the home (white letters on the blue sign) as you drive by the listed coordinates and complete the following simple math:

The calculations:
X=address÷1000
Y=X-12.987
Z=X-3.885

Final cache location:
N 43°Y’ W 091°Z’

The cache: The cache is a small sealed container with a logbook, pencil, and starts with a few small trade items. No climbing is required to find this cache. Please sign the log, trade fairly, and return the cache to its original location and state of concealment for others to enjoy. Also, please do not post photos or include in your on-line log anything to give away the special location of stage 2. Thanks.
