It is assumed that this rock and the nearby Kettle Pond were
left behind when the glaciers receded. This is a favourite picnic
spot that I remembering visiting as a child.
The "big rock" was a single rock until fairly recently -- it
only split in the last 10 years or so. Growing up, we called this
location, obviously, Big Rock. But now we've had to change to
calling it Split Rock :-)
This location is a good spot to stretch your legs. And there's
even an outhouse and garbage can!
If you venture a few metres further down the road, you'll find a
short trail leading down to Kettle Pond. This pond is more commonly
known by locals as Leech Lake but I think it needed an image
makeover so got a name upgrade.
