The challenge is out.
Who will win the coveted K8’n’Co
First to Find trophy for 2011?
It’s a couple of years since our last FTF competition and
there seems to be a plethora of new contenders so I thought it
about time for a new challenge.
The event location is the lookout picnic area
within the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. It’s a roofed area
with plenty of tables and some bench seating, toilets nearby and
panoramic views of the city.
Unfortunately there are no bbq’s at this site but please
bring your picnic hamper and a camp chair if you have one or
alternatively take advantage of the café within the grounds.
I’ll have a little gas burner set up with tea and coffee
available and an esky with waters and soft drinks.
Now onto the important stuff, finding the cache and claiming FTF
and the “no expense spared” gold trophy.
In order to create an even playing field, we have incorporated 3
disciplines, Geocaching, Orienteering and Trivia.
Each individual cacher or team will start at approx 5-10 minute
intervals and will have to locate six waypoints leading to the
cache, sign the log and return to the starting point.
The person or team completing the cache in the shortest time will
receive FTF honours.
However the fittest and fleet of foot may not necessarily have an
advantage because at each waypoint there will be a tag attached to
a man made object giving a multiple choice question or puzzle to
solve, to find the next WP.
(An example is pictured below).
Choose the correct answer and you will have the co-ords to the next
WP. Get it wrong and you will be looking about in
vain.
The first cache seeker will start at 10.00am and
I anticipate a winner will be announced by about 1.00 - 2.00pm
depending on numbers.
Of course this is a social get
together as well and all are welcome even if not wishing to
participate in the FTF Challenge.
Additional Info: There will be a couple of rules on the day.
Actually the first is a request more so than a
rule
1. Please keep to the paths. There is no need to
create Geo-trails through the gardens. All waypoints are on or
beside a path and despite the direction your gps may point, the
quickest and easiest route will be via a path.
2. Where a team is competing, the finish time will be that of the
person who signs the log.
Some people have asked about “Smart Phones”. I figure
that the time needed to look something up is time wasted and may
actually disadvantage the user.
