Geocache Description:

A pretty small cache in the location where Jesus is believed to have appeared before two of his followers after his resurrection. It is part of the Jesus Footsteps cache series.

Emmaus, near Latrun, is strategically located on the border between the inner plains (to the west) and Jerusalem mountains (to the east).

According to the New Testament (Luke 24), it was on the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus that two disciples met Jesus in his first appearance after the Resurrection. Arriving in Emmaus, they invited him to their house. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

Emmaus is also the location of one of the most important battles of Judas Maccabeus (Yehuda Ha-Maccabi). The battle took place in 166 BC between the Hasmonean forces of Judea, led by Judas Maccabeus, and the third expedition of Greek forces, led by Gorgias. When Judas heard that Gorgias is planning a night attack on his camp near Mitzpa, Judas abandoned his camp and led his forces to Emmaus, to attack the Hellenic base camp that remained there. The Judean forces won an important victory, killing several thousands Greeks.

Today, Emmaus is an archeological site, with remains from several periods, including Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and the Crusaders. The site is open every day, about 8am to 5pm, with some lunch break.

The cache is located outside the site and should be available 24h.
