The Texas Spirit
Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near
cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the
many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local
lore.
This site, which is also known as the Montopolis Cemetery,
is in a sad state of neglect and has not been mown for some time.
There could be as many as 172 interments here, with the most recent
possibly being as late as 2010, and the earliest dating back to
1876 (an extreme outlier, chronologically speaking, as most of the
graves are from the second half of the 20th Century, but
nevertheless that date lets me place this cache in the TSQ series).
However, my two primary online sources do not wholly synch up,
which could be explained by the fact that a 2009 survey revealed
that many previously-known headstones are now missing.
You do not need to enter the unfenced site itself, although you
have to squeeze through some underbrush. As always, any refinements
to the listed coordinates as provided by cache-seekers are
welcomed.
