The Bermuda Moongate is not an original local idea but Chinese.
The first plan for one was first introduced to the island in 1860 by a local sea captain after seeing one in China. He drew the design and once back in Bermuda, built one of his own. It was well received, copied and has since been adopted by Bermuda as a national symbol. This original Oriental Moongate was almost completely lost when the former gardener for the Duke of Westminster in the United Kingdom was employed to lay out the grounds for the former Bermudiana Hotel in the 1920’s.
The Bermuda Moongate version is built of Bermuda stone and is often used as an entrance to a garden or to a home.
Legend has it that people who walk through a Moongate, especially young lovers and honeymooners, are blessed with good luck.
This cache is on a trail which is part of the 21.7 miles of the former Bermuda Railway. The trails are broken into sections and this is my favorite one. It is approximately 2 miles long with views of the Great Sound and has lots of flora and fauna that was planted by God which beautifies the walk. There are ferns, palm trees, oleanders, rubber trees, aloe vera (you won’t believe the size), Surinam cherry trees, huge philodendron, loquats trees and papaya that line the trail. If you are lucky and the cherries are red and the loquats are yellow eat them! They are delicious and make wonderful jams and jellies.
A trivia note about the Moongate. Composer Ralph Blane who wrote “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and other songs from the movie “Meet Me in St. Louis” recorded a 45 rpm record called “Bermuda Blue” with “Step Through a Moongate” on the flip side.
