Geocache Description:

Finding this cache introduces one to some of the history of this small, quaint town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Chestertown is one of the more interesting towns in Maryland. In planning a visit one should allow considerable time to explore the area in order to gain an appreciation for the current amenities as well as the historic significance of the area. My wife’s ancestor, John Primrose, settled just across the Chester River in 1690 (on land that is now known as Primrose Point) and held a pew in St. Luke’s church in nearby Church Hill.

A town of about 4,000, Chestertown boasts a rich heritage as a grain and tobacco port and later in the 18th century it was the home of citizens who played leading roles in state and national affairs. On May 3, 1774, they boarded the brigantine Geddes, lying at anchor in the Chester River and tossed its cargo of tea overboard in protest against the British tea tax - a statement of conviction that mirrored the actions of their Boston brethren in the same year.

A short distance to the west is the site of the Battle of Caulk’s Field. On August 31, 1814 a group of local Militia under the command of Lt. Col. Philip A. Reed marched from Belle Air (Fairlee) to meet the British Forces. The British were repulsed with a loss of 15 killed, including their commander Sir Peter Parker. The American losses were slight.

The historical marker near GZ is part of the Baltimore Regional Civil War Trail. The marker describes the activities of the citizens in this area during the early 1860's.

Also at GZ is the statue of Bill “Swish” Nicholson who was born in Chestertown in 1914 and graduated from nearby Washington College in 1936. One of the more accomplished baseball players ever, legend has it that only he and Babe Ruth have ever been walked intentionally with the bases loaded. “Swish” lead the National League in home runs, RBI 1943 and 1944. He was runner-up for Most Valuable Player in 1944 and recorded 235 home runs and had eight career grand slams.
