Geocache Description:

A favorite location for us. Hope it also brings joy to many others. First to Find mini coin inside and some travel bugs.

This cache is the first hide for us. We’ve been caching for a little over a year at the time of the hide and have reached the 100 benchmark, getting many cool ideas along the way. We were motivated to do this hide due the loss of our cat Boss. This is a tribute to him. The cache location was chosen for several reasons. It is near the park where we do a lot of fishing. There are also many trails for hiking. It is on the mountain that overlooks our house and is also easily accessible year round.

As for getting to the cache, there are 2 easy approaches and another longer approach.

Easiest and most family friendly: Park at Sunrise Park in West Suffield, CT. Best parking is up at White’s Pond by the picnic pavilion. Note: this park is supposed to be for Suffield residents only and requires a town sticker for access. The park superintendent lives at the entry but I have never even seen anyone checking. Since the park hosts a lot of parties during the summer, there are many out of town visitors there anyway. Also, there are at least 3 other caches nearby. If there is a problem, proceed to the alternate parking location below.

Alternate Parking Location: This spot is at the intersection of Route 168 (Mountain Rd.) and Phelps Road in West Suffield, CT just up the hill from Sunrise Park. This is at the Spencer Woods trailhead of the Metacomet Trail which is a blue blazed trail.

The Sunrise Park approach is fun for many reasons. There are nice fishing spots for mostly sunfish, but occasionally a nice bass. Also, there is a decent beach at the south end of the pond and water is great on those 90 degree summer days. There are also several small trail loops featuring various vegetation. Playgrounds for small children are also in the park. Wildlife such as deer, turkeys and birds are plentiful. Directions: From parking are, proceed along the blue trail north along the edge of the pond. Follow until you see the trail merge for “Deer Run” and the “Over the Mountain” trails. Proceed left on the Deer Run trail. This trail is an uphill but easy trail and should be a 20 to 25 minute hike for most. Deer Run will merge with the Metacomet blue trail at the top. You’re on your own from there.

The second approach in Spencer Woods features a short but very aggressive ascent with switchbacks at first but gradually flattens out for the rest of the hike. Note the old chimney hiding to the east of the trail shortly after reaching the flatter portion of the trail.

Container is a 3" PVC pipe. Note: Please replace with rubber cap up.
