Geocache Description:

Small cache with log and room for small trackables. Bring your own writing instrument.

The Rev. Dr. David Adams came to rural Indiana from Baden-Baden Germany in the 1850’s. A minister, physician, and teacher, he worked as a teacher during the day and preached on Sundays. In 1852, he founded a Lutheran church in this location. There are those who say the church was named after Rev. Adams, but this is highly unlikely since church names are often derived from the location of the church, the name of a saint, or from a biblical reference. It’s more likely that the church’s name was derived from its location, since this spot is in southwestern Adams Township.

The original church was a log structure located on the front part of the land while interments took place back of the building. It was common at this time for people to be buried in the church yard because it was believed that to do so guaranteed the dearly departed would be received in heaven. This structure was active for the next 20 years until a new brick structure was built down the road in 1872.

Only half of the land enclosed in the fence was part of the original church site. The lower level to the north was overgrown and was purchased in the late 1990’s and cleaned up as part of a renovation project. While the cemetery now includes more land, there’s no plan in reactivating this cemetery in the future.

The ground here is uneven with some of the graves having collapsed and the turf can be soft, especially after a rain, so wheelchairs and strollers may not be able to pass. The cache you’re looking for is a dark green plastic jar with a black lid. It contains a log but no pencil, so bring your own writing instrument. There’s also room for small trade items and trackables. While this is a low muggle area the grounds are well maintained so some stealth may be required. On Memorial Day a VFW Honor Guard stops here to honor the veterans laid to rest here. Should they arrive while you are caching here, please stop your caching activity until after they have finished. As always, please do not cache here at night.
