Reaction to Effective Enemy Fire Effective Enemy Fire is “Enemy small arms fire which would cause heavy casualties should the section continue on its course”.
Sections must be trained to continue the advance in spite of the noise of fire directed at someone else regardless of stray rounds amongst them.

It is very important that at the first sign of effective enemy fire your section does not instantaneously drop to the ground in fright as would be a natural reaction. To combat this there are a few simple drills that should be followed upon receipt of the words of command

“Take Cover!”

‘Dash’, ‘Down’, ‘Crawl’, ‘Observe’, ‘Sights’, ‘Return Fire’.

Dash Sprint forwards in zigzag patterns for no more than 15m. This is done to make it hard for the enemy to fire accurately at you, and to try and ‘throw’ their sights off you.

Down Dive, Jump, or Fall to the ground (preferably into some kind of nearby cover)

Crawl and zigzag, into any possible nearby cover making sure you are close enough to hear the section commander.

Observe Look around the area, and through your sights for enemy targets and to gain a picture of the overall situation.

Sights Make sure your sights are set to the correct distance i.e. 300m

Return Fire Fire at likely cover or at targets to keep the enemy suppressed whilst the section commander is trying to locate the enemy and formulate a plan.
