Geocache Description:

This is the tenth in the "Curse of the FTF (Wellington)" series of caches.

Thanks to boxhill for initiating the series with Curse of the FTF #1 (Wellington) – GC2K35Q.

The rules are really simple ...

Guidelines for this series:

  1. The FTF'er should place the next cache in the series (in this case, Curse of the FTF #11 (Wellington)) within one month. Please note that only the FTF'er, and not everyone who finds this cache, should place the next cache.

  2. You can be the FTF for only one cache in this series; and no joint-FTFs will be accepted on these caches. This spreads the FTF love around, and gives others a chance to play along. (This is at least until everyone who wants to has had ago at FTF.)

  3. The next cache can be of any size or type (multi, puzzle, traditional, etc.), but I do ask that you hide it within the Greater Wellington area (Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Kapiti Coast up to Waikanae), and if it is a puzzle then it cannot be too hard, as it should be easy enough for everyone to find.

  4. You must include this set of guidelines in your listing for the series. I will be happy to answer any questions concerning the guidelines, or about the placing of caches for those who have not placed a cache before.

There is no requirement beside the standard signing of the cache log to prevent you from logging this cache when found. Everyone should log their find, and hopefully the FTF person will play along and place another cache, but it is in no way a requirement for logging your find. But if you don't intend to carry on the series, please do not claim the FTF, and leave it for someone else.

    Note:

Under Geocaching guidelines, while there is no requirement for the FTF to place a new cache within a month, it is hoped that future FTF'ers, if they so wish, will enter into the spirit of the series, and continue to place new caches.

    Getting to this cache

This cache takes you on the route Early Maori used to link the Porirua and Wellington harbours and brings you to The Korokoro dam which was built in 1903.

Take the easy walk up to the first dam built in New Zealand and then if you feel up to it, add on a more challenging loop walk up to Belmont Trig for some of the best 360 degree views in the region. This track is suitable for walking or mountain biking.

A feature of New Zealand’s early european history is the large number of severely damaging fires that broke out from time to time in early New Zealand towns. These fires would destroy whole blocks of wooden buildings because they were built close together. Early timber buildings in Petone suffered this fate even though an artesian water supply was available. Although the ratepayers were initially reluctant to endorse the funding of a dam, they were eventually persuaded to do so to get a water supply of sufficient pressure and volume.

The waters of the Korokoro stream were already in use by the Petone Woollen Mills when the Petone Borough proposed to utilise the stream for a water supply. The mill had a totara timber dam on the lower reaches to drive a turbine at the mill.

There are several access points to this track. Oakleigh Street and Stratton Street require a bit of up hill walking on the return trip but there are toilets available at the car parks. Please obey all the rules on the signs.

Due to poor GPS reception please read the HINT and no need to leave the track

Cornish Street, Petone, just off SH2 is another good entrance spot and has the flattest walking through the entire Korokoro Gorge but there aren't any toilet facilities at this entrance.

For maps and further information, talk to the team at an i-SITE Visitor Centre ;or you could also get more information from the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Also information is available from the following site Tracks NZ Webpage

You are looking for a camouflaged 1 litre round container with logbook, pencils and a few swaps.

Please note that you must sign the logbook for each cacher. Finds logged online that do not correspond to the logbook may be deleted. We would appreciate if you could please hide the cache back how you found it, as we really don't want it to get muggled.
