This cache has been archived.

zooki: I have not had a chance to check this out but many DNF's make me think this has gone the same way as the others I placed in these woods. Sorry for any inconvenience. Zooki

Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of three caches placed in Ashington Community Woodland. Each cache can be found on its own or all 3 can collected on a round trip walk around the woods. These caches have been place with the permission of Northumberland County Council’s Woodland management officer.

Ashington Community Woodland has been developed on part of the reclaimed site of Ashington Colliery and when it was first developed was one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The site covers 133 hectares and the first part of the planting took place about 40 years ago in the 1970’s then further planting took place in the 1990’s. The woods offer a diverse selection of wildlife and plants including swans, ducks, woodcocks, waxwings, deer and rabbits. The trees are a variety of broadleaf and pine including Scots pine, Lodge pole, Locust tree, Alder, Hazel and Ash. These woods offer a haven of peace and tranquility with a lake and 2 ponds. An old pit heap gives you views up to Coquet Island on a clear day and footpaths criss-cross through the trees.

Parking is available beside the Police station at NZ27401 88090 then you need to cross the railway line and walk up the track to get into the woods. Stout footwear or wellies are recommended if there has been a lot of rain.

Most of the paths are clear to see but there are many different routes so I recommend you mark your co-ordinates as you enter the woodland to ensure you can find your way back. There is a map at the stone seat as you enter the woods and again I would suggest you check this out before starting your walk.
