Prologue: I was driving home from grabbing a nearby cache when I saw a
boy on a bicycle. He was sitting on the seat with one foot on the ground
and the other on a pedal and was looking over the top of a basketball at the
hoop. There was definitely a trick shot being crafted by this kid.
The Puzzle: March Madness is upon us. Teams on the bubble
are doing everything they can to win their last games for a chance at making the
NCAA tournament. Our team is in a shootout and the game is coming down to
the wire. It's tied with only seconds remaining. The ball is inbounded by
Josh (player #1). The team sets up in their Triangle Offense. Rob
(player #2) dribbles down the court under intense defensive pressure.
Rob crosses the half court line and passes the ball to Larry (Player #3).
2 seconds are left on the clock. Larry doesn't have a shot so passes the
ball to Pax (Player #4) who shoots as the horn sounds. SWISH!!! The
crowd goes wild!!!
Rounding to the nearest foot, how far does the ball travel from the point Rob
(#2) passes to Larry (#3) who passes to Pax (#4) then to the basket (what is the
sum of the lengths of the 3 blue arrow line segments to the nearest foot)?
Cache coordinates: N38 50.(189+distance) W94 45.(157+distance)
Lastly, for those not inclined toward math, you may be able to draw the solution to scale using a protractor (can be found with school supplies for between $1-$2) then measure the lines.
