Geocache Description:

Like most southern California residents, I passed by this cluster of Victorian era homes along the Pasadena freeway for years before I found out what it was....

There is a lot of Southern California history in this part of northeastern Los Angeles. In this area are the Southwest Museum, local historic adobes, the historic Lummis home, the Autry Museum, and this little gem, Heritage Square Museum. In Los Angeles in the 1940s, 50s and 60s there was no love for anything old, and little thought of preserving the past. The razing of Bunker Hill to build the downtown civic center resulted in an outcry to preserve historic structures for future generations. Heritage Square Museum was started at that time to be a place to relocate historic homes in order to save them from demolition and restore them for public enjoyment and education. You can get a pretty good look at the buildings from the street as you grab this cache. Seeing this little village always gets me imagining what it would have been like to live in LA 150 years ago. If you come here during museum hours you can walk around the grounds and tour the insides of the houses, guided by docents dressed in period clothing. There are also numerous events throughout the year, in particular the Lamplight event in early December where volunteers reenact scenes and stories based on persons and events in LA history. Being history and architecture buffs, the RodentLovers have visited here a lot, and we learn something new about LA history and life in the Victorian era every time we visit. Definitely worth a return trip for a tour. The cache is an easy find, and is accessible from the street without entering the grounds. While you are in the area, consider checking out the nearby Lummis Home cache to make your visit to the area complete.
