Geocache Description:

This cache is located very near a trail head right on the main road in the park. Parking is within 150 feet of the cache, and the terrain is essentially flat. Cache within 25 feet of a well defined trail.

James River State Park is fortunate to be located in an area with so much local and national history. Figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Daniel Boone have all passed through this area during the early history of our country. The river itself was a significant means of transportation for many years.

Many people have heard of a bateau, which actively used the river for over 100 years to transport agricultural goods downriver to Richmond. What you may not know is that the bateau was originally created by a tobacco farmer in this area, and the first recorded sale of a bateau was to Thomas Jefferson! Later, a canal system connecting Richmond to Lynchburg was created, and passed just the other side of the river from the park…with one original culvert still in use today by the railroad.

This cache is a regular sized lock-n-lock plastic container. It will contain a log book, a collector’s card, and some VA State Park swag.

This cache is part of the Virginia State Parks 75th Anniversary Geocaching Adventure. Each state park has a cache for this series, each with a unique collector’s card. There are small prizes for finding 5, 10, 20, and ALL of the caches. Most parks require a small parking fee while geocaching. For more information go to: www.virginiaoutdoors.com.
