The original Bubba’s Archive began in the early 1990’s, just after Hurricane Hugo, when Bubba came into possession of a large collection of historic documents related to the area of Sumter and the outlaying county. The local newspaper ran a series of historic articles that featured the photos and stories drawn from the organized collection, for many years, and became very popular for its unique perspective of the regional history.
When I began researching this particular area, I was told about Bubba and his collection. At that time he was the leading authority of the local history and he provided invaluable information through a series of communications. The copious notes I collected from Bubba later became the inspiration for a number of my local hides, including the Manchester History Tour, Sumter Junction, and Follow Wherever It Leads. Without Bubba’s help these and my other area hides would be much the less. Tragically, Bubba had heart trouble and passed away in 2006, during what was suppose to be routine surgery. W. A. “Bubba” McElveen served as Mayor of Sumter from 1980 to 1988 and was known as someone who never met a stranger. The container is a painted ammo can hidden along the bike trail that leads to Campbell Pond, just a short hike from the parking area.
