Geocache Description:

History: - Sir Lowry's Pass Village was a resting place for settlers before they began their ascent of the Gantouw Mountains. The pass was opened on July 6, 1830. Sir Lowry Cole travelled over the pass in a Cape cart pulled by two horses

Formally known as Gandoupas (meaning 'pass of the eland') Money was scarce in the Cape and financial controllers in London vetoed ambitious road-building programs. It was governor, Sir Lowry Cole who on his own initiative allowed the pass to be built and it was finally opened in 1836. The pass was constructed at a cost of 7 011 English Pounds the view from the summit is 402 meters high.

A viewing point offers panoramic views of the entire Helderberg basin. The viewing point offers amazing views of False Bay and large parts of the Cape Peninsula. The summit of the pass is also a popular launching spot for paragliders.
This is the end of the old road, now access is now closed to the N2.

NB: Cache is only accessible from The old road side, cross over the railway crossing.
