Im Jahr 1354 wird die Rupertikirche am Fuß des Florianiberges in Straßgang erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, doch ist der Bau des kleinen Gotteshauses im Kern frühromanisch oder sogar karolingisch (Ende des 9. Jahrhunderts). Damit wäre es das älteste Gotteshaus im Grazer Stadtgebiet. Es ist denkbar, daß die Kirche als Gegengewicht zu den beiden nahegelegenen Eigenkirchen der Aribonen St. Georg (die heutige Pfarrkirche von Straßgang) und St. Martin gegründet wurde. Das Patrozinium würde jedenfalls darauf hindeuten.
1620 wurde die Kirche umgebaut, damals wurde das Langhaus gewölbt und der heutige Chor errichtet. Die Ausstattung der Kirche, die im schlichten Außenbau noch die kleinen romanischen Fensteröffnungen zeigt, entstammt der Barockzeit. Für den Hochaltar schuf Franz Stainpichler 1675 das Bild mit dem Kirchenpatron. Von Worms kommend hatte der heilige Rupert die Erzdiözese Salzburg, wo er 718 gestorben und von seinem Nachfolger Virgil im neu erbauten Dom beigesetzt wurde, gegründet und von dort aus als erster Bischof das umliegende Gebiet missioniert. Dargestellt ist er mit dem Salzburger Dom zu seinen Füssen und als Patron des Salzbergbaues mit einem Salzfass in der Hand.
Das altehrwürdige Gotteshaus befindet sich seit Jahrzehnten im Privatbesitz des Bauern, auf dessen Grundstück es steht.

English Version
In the year 1354 the little Church of Rupert is founded on documents for the first time. However, the core of the building is from early romanesque period or even carlovingian from the end of the 9th century. In latter case, it would be the oldest church in today´s area of Graz. Possibly, this church was built as counterweight to the private minster of the house of the Aribons, St. Georg (todays parish church of Straßgang) and St. Martin. The patrocinium would indicate it that way.
In 1620 the church was rebuilt, the nave was domed and the chancel was built. While the church still shows the small romanesque window openings from outside, the interior was built during baroque time. In 1675, Franz Stainpichler created the painting of the high altar, showing the patron saint of the church. Coming from Worms, Holy Rupert founded the archdiocese of Salzburg and evangelized the surrounding countries. He died in 718 and was entombed in the newly built dome by his successor Virgil. He is pictured with the dome of Salzburg at his feet and as he is the patron of the salt miners, with a barrel of salt in his hands.
Since the last decades, the venerable church has been in private property of the farmer owning the land where it is situated.
