Geocache Description:

FUN FUN FUN by the fire as we all play two classic games - HANGMAN and BATTLESHIPS.

The two games share the same basic layout. An 8x8 square with lines labelled A-H and rows labelled 1-8.

HANGMAN consists of 8 eight-letter words. All eight words may be played at the same time! BATTLESHIP is a grid where there are seven hidden 'ships'. One of 4 squares, two of 3 squares, three of 2 squares and one of a single square. All are 'straight' (no L-shapes) and no ship touches another.

The two games are played in parallel. At each turn you may EITHER guess a letter for ONE of the words for Hangman (A-H) OR may guess a square for Battleships.

For a guess in Hangman (which is made in the form of a note on the cache page; for example, "Word D, I guess the letter A") a reply will be posted as another note stating if the letter occurs in that word and, if so, in which place/s.
BTW, you won't get 'hung'!

For a guess in Battleships, simply post a note with the combination of the square you wish to choose; for example, D4. The note in reply will state if this is a hit or miss, but not the size of the ship.

The grids on the cache page will not be changed to reflect the guesses - that's way beyond my abilities!! You will need to print out a copy for yourself and fill it in as guesses are made.

The idea is (although some clever clogs will probably manage to short-cut it!) that both games will need to be completed (or very nearly so) before the puzzle can be solved.

When you have the locations of all the ships, use the number/letter combinations for the squares to mark off all the corresponding letters in the Hangman game. Then use these to complete the co-ordinates for the cache.

There is no limit to the number of guesses each cacher/caching team may make BUT, after you have made a guess, you must allow two others to make a guess before you have another turn.

Eventually, hopefully(!), you will have 17 letters. Convert these to numbers using the usual method A=1, B=2 etc) and then find the co-ordinates using the following equation;
N51 00.(16th letter-8th)(13th-5th-4th)(2nd+9th+17th) W000 4(6th letter+12th).(11th+1st)(7th+15th)(10th/3rd +14th)
