The
Walk
Orange Kloof is a unique part of the Table
Mountain Reserve. Strictly controlled access, and with large parts
of it having been protected from fires for more than thirty years,
has meant that it now supports some of the largest patches of
indigenous forest on the Cape Peninsula.
The pace will be gentle with plenty of chances
to look at any interesting flowers, birds, insects, spiders etc.
that we might pass along the way. There may be some steepish bits
and mild scrambles, but nothing too serious and we'll be avoiding
some of the trickier parts and detours done by the previous group.
Our destination will be the entrance of the Woodhead tunnel where
we will stop for a tea break. If we are fortunate we may see some
of the Red Disa (Disa Uniflora) that normally start flowering
around late January to mid February.
Because the area is protected, only 12 people
per day are allowed to walk in Orange Kloof, so places are limited
and will be given on a first come first serve basis. However,
because this walk is intended for the less fit and agile among us,
I am asking that those people that did the last one, or have done
the Kloof before, give an opportunity to others that have not.
Please indicate in your log, if you would like to join in on the
walk.
We will meet at the entrance to Orange Kloof
(S34° 00.655 E018° 24.300) at 7:45am and leave at 8am to be back in
time to join others coming for the picnic at 12pm.
Please remember to bring a sun hat, water,
suncream as well as a warm top - It can actually get cold even in
summer!
The
Event
The event is open to everyone and will take
place at the above coordinates, where there are several picnic
spots next to the Constantia Nek parking. Starting at 12pm, and
hopefully coinciding with the walkers return, it will take the
shape of a simple meet and greet picnic. So don't forget to bring
your own snacks, lunch, beverages etc.
As amendments may be made closer to the time, please add this to
your watchlist so that you will be notified of any changes through
the logs.
