The Rex was bought by the False Bay Fish and Cold Storage Company in early 1903 and set sail from England in September 1903. She was a 244-ton trawler with a ten-man crew. She sailed from Simon's Town at 09h00 on 3 October 1903 and at about 10h30 was anchored off Kalk Bay where she had come to obtain ice from cold storage. She had already received one load and was awaiting a second load when her anchors begain to drag from the strong south-east wind.

She drifted onto the rocks between 13h00 and 1400. Telegrams were sent to Simon's Town and within an hour a powerful tug called the Scotsman and the Maori, another steam-trawler belonging to the company, reached Kalk Bay to attempt to tow the Rex off the rocks. However the wreck had sprung a leak and they left her where she was. All 10 crew reached the shore at this point. This included the captain (David C. Newbury).

Her large boiler remained on the beachfront for many years. The wreck caused the company to go into liquidation the following year. In the Seaside News issue no 47, of 24 October 1903, it was reported that the manager of the False Bay Fish and Cold Storage Company, who had lost his job as a result of the wreck, had beaten up Captain David Newbury in a bar brawl at the Kings Hotel on Saturday 17 October. He was fined £2 or, 14 days imprisonment for assault.
