A lock and lock hidden in the woods beyond St. Michael's Cemetery in Jessup, PA.
At approximately 2:30 AM on November 17th, 2010, a rare tornado touched down in the Lackawanna Valley. Excerpt from the Scranton Times:
"A tornado with 95-mph winds struck Jessup early Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed. The twister was a category EF1, which is the second-weakest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, said David Nicosia, a warning coordination meteorologist for the NWS.
Mr. Nicosia was in Lackawanna County on Thursday to assess the aftermath. The storm damaged a family's home, uprooted trees and tore off a wall from G&S Auto Sales. "It was a pretty good storm," Mr. Nicosia said. "I was impressed."
Tornadoes at night in this region are rare because they usually require warmer air to form, Mr. Nicosia said. The Jessup tornado touched down at 2:30 a.m. near the auto business, then whipped through a Jessup Sports Association Little League field and St. Michael's Cemetery.
It traveled two miles north before stopping in Archbald near Laminations Inc., which lost a section of its roof.
Mr. Nicosia said it was lucky that no one was hurt. Damage was concentrated, and the funnel - which was at most 150 yards wide - avoided borough homes to the south.Jessup's twister was confirmed based on satellite data, the alignment of the damage and the path of the storm."
To access the cache, enter the St. Michael's Cemetery via Route 247. Immediately upon leaving 247 on the right side of the road is where the car dealship was that was destroyed by the tornado once stood. The day I placed this cache they were tearing down what was left of the building. The Little League field across the street also suffered heavy damage, with a row of bleachers thrown 200 feet, a concrete dugout destroyed and several large telephone poles snapped in half. Parking can be found at N 41.28.326, W 075 33.303. When parking please just pull off the road slightly. There is a small clearing right next to the coordinates which looks like a parking area, but upon further inspection you can see that there are graves there. As always, please be respectful when visiting the cemetery.
The cache itself is hidden under the largest uprooted tree I have ever seen in person. There is no defined trail, so enjoy some light bushwhacking and the ever-majestic picker bushes. While en route to the GZ, you will see roughly a dozen large trees uprooted.
Note: I don't force anyone to search for my geocaches. Please remember that you assume all responsibility when geocaching.
