Geocache Description:

This cache is a little preview of Squealy’s Little Bits further out on the trail.

Consider it a practice run for what you will find there. The whole route is well worth the trip, we hope to entice more cachers to come out and explore this great trail. It’s the remains of the old “Hoot Toot and Whistle” railroad from the 30’s.

You can Google HTW for more info on the rail line history, but here is one brief summary:
This section was discontinued as a result of the Hurricane of Sept 21, 1938 which obliterated several sections of fill and damaged the grade beyond repair. The section is about 8 Miles long (from the dam to mountain mills). You will be rewarded by seeing some pretty massive washouts, finding old rail ties which have been in place since the 1920s. You may even stumble upon a few old rail spikes, braces or other such relics. There are a few pretty fantastic Rock cuts, the most interesting of them are cut into turns. One of the old washouts even had the old concrete water culvert still intact.

Be aware, from Sept.1 to Dec. 31, there may be hunters out here. Stay on the trail, wear orange, and please keep your dog on a leash.

Cache has log and pencil, a few trinkets, and $2 Sacagawea coin for FTF.
