What is a benchmark? From the benchmark hunting section of
GC.com:
"A benchmark is a point whose position is known to a high degree
of
accuracy and is normally marked in some way. They are used by
land
surveyors, builders and engineers, map makers, and other
professionals who need an accurate answer to the question,
"Where?"
The most common and obvious benchmarks are the metal disks that
can
be seen attached to buildings, bridges, etc.
Another type of survey marker is a stainless steel rod driven
into
the ground and covered by a metal housing with a hinged cap.
