History snippet
Just up Robert Rogers Rd. from this site, past County Rd. and the guard rail is a rock and a plaque leading down a town R.O.W. to near the Great Meadows where James Rogers and his family settled. His land was granted on Dec. 17,1748 by the Lord Proprietors. Rogers and Joseph Putney were the first two men to settle with families in Dunbarton. It was here his log house and barn stood which were destroyed by the Indians. They escaped and went to Rumford.
After returning from Rumford (Concord) and rebuilding in 1759, they improved about 98 acres of meadow and about 100 acres of upland and had a dwelling and a barn. With James resided his son, the brave and famous scout, Robert Rogers, who made birch and hazel brooms and carried them to Concord on his back to sell.
Joseph Putney's eldest son built close to James Rogers' home. The two cellar sites are close together and can still be seen.

Robert Rogers was famous (Rogers Rangers) for the tactics he used in the French and Indian War. His tactics are still used to this day in military Ranger units.
