Der Wachenberg, Geopunkt im UNESCO Geo-Naturpark Bergstrasse-Odenwald.
Der Wachenberg in Weinheim ist ein alter Vulkan, der seit vielen Jahrmillionen nicht mehr ausgebrochen ist. Er war zu seiner aktiven Zeit um einiges höher als der heutige Berg.
Heute steht nur noch die herausgewitterte Füllung des einstigen Schlotes.
Er ist die prägnanteste Erhebung Weinheims. An seiner Nordseite befindet sich ein Steinbruch.
In den letzten Jahren gab es einige Kontroversen, was den Ausbau des Steinbruchs anging.
Es sollten hier in den kommenden Jahrzehnten etwa 4,8 Millionen Kubikmeter Gestein abgebaut werden, wodurch der Wachenberg seine Kuppe verloren hätte.
Ausserdem bestand eine Bedrohung für viele schützenswerte und seltene Tier- und Pflanzenarten. (Quelle: BUND Kreisgruppe Bergstrasse)
In der Folge kam es zu gerichtlichen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen der Stadt Weinheim auf der einen und den Betreibern des Steinbruches und der Gemeinde Hirschberg auf de anderen Seite.
Diese fanden mit einem Urteil des Verwaltungsgerichtshofes Baden-Württemberg, das der Stadt Weinheim das Recht einräumte, eine Veränderung des Wachenberges zu verhindern, ein vorläufiges Ende.
An den angegebenen Koordinaten befindet sich eine Hinweistafel.
Zum Loggen müssen folgende Fragen beantwortet werden:
1) Vor wievielen Jahren bahnte sich das Magma an dieser Stelle einen Weg zur Oberfläche?
2) Wie breit war der Vulkanschlot?
3) Wie heisst das Gestein, das im Schlot verblieben und dort erstarrt ist?

Ihr könnt den Cache gerne loggen und mir dann die Mail senden. Bei Unstimmigkeiten melde ich mich bei Euch.
Geparkt werden kann direkt südlich der Wachenburg auf einem grossen Parkplatz, den man sieht wenn man die Strasse heraufkommt.
Von dort sind es noch ca. 200m auf geteertem Weg bis zum Cache.

The Wachenberg, Geopoint in the UNESCO Geo- Naturalpark Bergstrasse-Odenwald.
The Wachenberg in Weinheim/Germany is an old inactive volcano, which didn´t erupt
for millions of years. At the time it was active, the mountain was much higher than
today.
All that is left is the filling of the old vent, the rest of the volcano eroded over the years.
It is the most eye-catching elevetion of Weinheim. On its northern flank is a quarry.
In the last years there was a controversy in Weinheim about the further development of it.
It was planned to mine up to 4.8 million cubic metres (169.510.400 cubic feet)
in the next decades, so the Wachenberg would have lost its summit.

The operating company und the neighbouring municipality of Hirschberg sued the city
of Weinheim because it had tried to stop all changes on the Wachenberg.
After a decision in June 2010 of the Higher Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg Weinheim was allowed to preserve the Wachenberg as it is today and the law suit came to a
provisional ending.

2)How large was the diameter of the volcanic vent (in metres)
3)What is the name of the volcanic rock that remained in the vent and solidified there?

There´s a parking lot directly south of the Wachenburg, where you can leave your car.
You can see it in front of you when you come up the road.
From there its only 250 yards to the cache on a tarred street.
