Geocache Description:

No longer a micro cache, Eaton Mess is back as a regular cache with a donated container thanks to Pinfold.

Eaton Mess

This cache is hidden in the picturesque village of Eaton. The cache is an ammo box with several trinkets in it to start it off, including Xbox games (not Xbox 360), a book, a baby rattle and some other little toys. You can get almost all of the way to the GZ with a pushchair, but the last few feet to the cache are up a steep incline which will require your hands and feet to get up.

Parking in the village is limited, but there is a fairly large grass verge on the side of the main road not far from the GZ.

Eaton sits near the source of the River Devon (pronounced "deevon") which runs through the Vale of Belvoir. It's a lovely little village with a great play park for children. The village has been around for many years (the church dates back to the 12th century) and thus has a couple of legends. According to Wikipedia these include:

The Phantom Cat

Several sightings of a large, black cat have been seen around Eaton. Some believe that it is a black panther, some believe that there may be more of them. Several animals have been found dead up trees, and there are plenty of potential places around the village where these big cats could be taking shelter.

Ash Tree Operations

In the 17th century it was rumoured that Eaton became a hiding ground for several criminals around the vale, and as such the number of serious crimes, including burglary and murder rose significantly. The police of the time felt that Eaton was too far afield to do anything about it, so a local group of vigilantes created what was known as Ash Tree Operations. It is said that they built a large underground shelter, the entrance to which was a hollow ash tree...hence the name. The legend states that whenever someone commits a serious crime in Eaton and gets away with it the site of Ash Tree Operations will be found and the finder will restart the band and "deal" with the perpetrator.

We hope you enjoy our first hide. Hopefully it'll be the first of a few. A hat tip to Table9tom & Jake for providing the first cache container (which has sadly since gone) as swag for one of their caches (Jake's First Hide). Comments are welcome.

Good luck!
